today sucks

Yesterday was amazing. I'll post a full race recap tomorrow, but for today I'm going to wallow just a tiny bit. Today marks 7 years since my dad died. Every moment of today is just a harsh reminder that it has been 7 years since I saw him, hugged him and heard his voice.

I was always such a daddy's girl. My whole life I had way more in common with him than I ever did with my mom. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom, she is an amazing and inspiring woman, but it was always different with my dad. He just always seemed to get me. I miss him like crazy. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him. I work every day towards being a person he would be proud of, towards living a life he would approve of and even more so toward keeping his legacy alive. I think today is hard for my whole family, it is kind of like a giant pink elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. But we all try to find ways to remember the good times we had with him and hope that he is watching down and being with us every day.

My dad was crazy smart, I like to think that I got that from him. But he was so much more than that too. He was hard working, dedicated, sweet, overly emotional, giving, and really just overall an great guy. The week after he died was obviously hard but there is one memory that sticks out that always makes me smile. After word spread that he died, we got a call from his manager at IBM, he called to ask if we could wait an extra day until the funeral because there was an overwhelming reaction from his overseas coworkers. They all wanted to fly in to share their condolences with us. We agreed and the night of his wake we were completely overwhelmed. IBM'rs flew in from England, Japan and a couple other countries to come pay their respects. I was a bit out there during the wake, but I remember each and every one of his coworkers - so many that we had to extend the wake by more than 2 hours to accommodate them - sharing stories about him. There was a very consistent theme throughout each and every story, he was a workaholic who made a huge difference to the company, but his love of his job was nothing compared to his love of his family, my mom and my sisters and me. Every single person we talked to had the same opinion of him, if they had spent any time with him at all, they knew all about us. They knew about his daughter who was following in his footsteps (me), his daughter who graduated from Columbia University!!! (Jenn, my older sister) and they knew about his little all star swimmer (Jess, my baby sister) and  mostly they knew about his utter devotion to the woman who held it all together for him, my mom. But it didn't end there, they knew about my cousins, details about how proud he was of each and every one of his nieces and nephews, and there is definitely not a shortage of nieces and nephews (I'm one of 20 grandchildren on my dad's side of the family).

I came here today intending to write a post about how much I miss my dad and how it is a struggle with every life event that he won't be there for. I'm glad that the post evolved into a much happier one, sharing a memory that makes me smile. I do miss him terribly, and today does suck, but I know that he would be ok with me crying about missing him as long as I think back and remember him with a smile.

Miss you daddy.

nervous sunday!

follow run drean cook on facebook
This morning as ya'll are reading this, Mike and I are already at the start of our first race of the season! I'm super excited and I think more nervous than he is! He is doing the half marathon today, I'm doing the lame-o-blame-o 5k, and I'm the nervous one, go figure.

Race piles ready to go! Only things that are missing are our liquids. Mike gets two little ones to go in the belt and I'm bringing my water just to hydrate before and after the run. The belt is brand new, he has only done one short run in it, but he loved it and is super excited. Inside the pouch on the belt he has some Jelly Belly Sports Beans, which are his favorite fueling method. He tried some GUs and didn't like the consistency so the jelly beans work for him.

Wish us luck today!

game day fashion

Good morning friends and happy friday! I'm so excited about the weekend! This is a big weekend for Mike and the kick off of race season for me! Today during the day I'm heading out to my bff's bakery to do a mini photo shoot! I'm so excited! She is applying to be on the Food Network's show Cupcake Wars and she needs to submit photos with the application. Then tonight Mike and I are sneaking out for a date night. Probably a movie, Contagion if I had to guess. Mike really wants to see it and it reminds me of Outbreak which was one of my favorite movies as a teenager. Tomorrow I'm making a low key pre-race dinner for us and we're going to go to bed early and take it super easy. Then Sunday morning is the big day! I wish the blogger app for my phone was better so I could post, but I'll be posting the results and some pictures on the Run Dream Cook Facebook page! You should go become a fan over there!!

I'm not really a football fan, but I certainly enjoy a good game day party. I realized after putting this outfit together that it would be a definite no-no for a real game day party at my sister's house. She and her boyfriend are die hard Michigan fans and this outfit would be far too close to Ohio State colors for them! I may not be allowed in the house, but I would look good!

finding my strong.

I've picked up a couple issues of Runners World lately and I'm totally loving it. I had never read the magazine before, probably because I never ever would have considered myself a "runner" before, but some of the articles are majorly inspiring. My cousin and I were talking about it the other day (she too is a relatively new runner) and we agreed that it is the Cosmo of the running world. Nothing ground breaking really, but always good articles and decent tips, and if nothing else, it is entertaining.

One of my favorite parts of the magazine has been the ads. In magazines like Cosmo I normally glaze over the ads and move onto the next "10 greatest things he has never asked you to do in bed but secretly desires" article. Which by the way usually makes me laugh out loud for at least half of them - I mean really does he want me to nibble on his elbow skin...I think not! But anyway, I find the ads in Runners World to be inspiring. I've posted an image from Saucony's "find your strong" campaign on my blog before, but at the time I had no idea where it was from. While reading the magazine I was surprised to find that it was actually a full page ad for Saucony.

So fast forward to Tuesday. Page from Twenty-Six and Then Some posted a link to her Tumblr. She said it is just visual things that she has liked on the interwebs and posts there. I checked it out and there was the video spot for the "find your strong" campaign. I'm completely in love with it. I am inspired. I want to go lift weights and ignore the fact that my tush is STILL sore from Monday's leg press debacle.
I wanted to share it with ya'll, I love it.

Where do you find your strong??

this week on

oh, how pinteresting! I picked shoes for this week's theme because I just got the cutest pair of flats for fall from DSW. The best part about them is that they were on clearance and then I had a $10 savings pass and my total came to $2.06!! Flats for $2?! Seriously can't beat that!
These are them, they are called "good" by the brand Big Buddha:

Pinterest is a great place to drool over swoon worthy shoes. There is definitely not a shortage of heels, flats and boots to add to my want list. Here are more than a few that I'm loving right now.

The lace on those heels is amazing. I love the stark white with the black detail and the crisp black heel. Just gorgeous.

Every girl needs a pair of cowboy boots and these ones are great! I love the flower embroidery on them.

Is there anything better than comfy fun flats? I love the bright colors and the softness of the knit material, they beg to be worn with a big cozy sweater!

Sparkle heels. Um...Enough said!

These fantastic boots are from Target! Can you believe that?! Love them. The buckle, the fact that they are flat...The scrunched fabric. Love them.

Easy gray flats, they go with anything and I love the ridge around the bottom because then your feet won't get soaked every time you go outside!

Amazing boots. I don't even know what else there is to say about these...They are perfect.

I tried these on the other day and I fell in love with them. They are a gorgeous soft pink color with the perfect rounded toe. I adore them.

I'm not sure where I think I'm going to wear these shoes...but I love them.

every day I'm shuffling

This week is a big week! It is Mike's first half marathon and it is our first race of the fall season. I'm doing the 5k, but he is going for all 13.1 miles! I'm so excited for him. He has a big couple of weeks coming up, so send lots of good thoughts and vibes his way please!

Mike at our last 5k. He's in the yellow with his determined face on!
Monday - 3 miles
Tuesday - cross training - elliptical and upper body weights
Wednesday - Speedy 2 miles
Thursday - 3 miles
Friday - cross training - biking and lower body weights
Saturday - 4 slow miles and some yoga
Sunday - Dutchess County Classic 5k!

I'm really excited about getting this racing season started. I'm hopeful that some of my family will come out to support Mike this weekend. I'm really proud of him.

like a good neighbor...

The old Polish couple across the street are there!

Recently I had a terrible, no good, very bad day. It was absolutely awful. I was getting ready to go to the gym before work and somehow managed to lock myself out of both my house and my car without my cell phone. The worst part about this was that it happened at about 1 in the afternoon. No one was home. I knocked on the doors of my neighbors on both sides of my house and no one was there. Then I went one house more on either side with the same results. I was in a panic. My mom and sister (the only people with keys to the house) were about an hour away and Mike was at work too. Finally I realized that the couple who live across the street from my house are retired so they would probably be home. I got to their house and they let me in to use the phone and call Mike so he could come with the garage opener and let me in to the house and then break into the car for me to get the keys. It was awful and it took about 2 hours total, but I got to work exactly on time. Then when I got to work, I managed to leave my lights on and killed my battery. Of course I was parked between two cars so jumping it was a pain in the butt. It was completely terrible.

I was so grateful to my neighbors for letting me use their phone. The next day I baked a big plate of cookies and brought them over to show my gratitude. It just felt like the right thing to do. Sometimes you have to do the neighborly thing and lend a hand.

always remember

I'm sitting in my living room doing some blog related web surfing and I have the September 11th tribute on TV and it just seemed inappropriate to not mention anything about it today.

I was young, only a senior in high school, on 9/11/01. I happened to be walking into gym class when the first plane hit. The gym teacher had a tv in her office and happened to have the news on so we saw the second tower get hit just after 9am. At the time my sister and father were supposed to be in NYC that day, my sister was actually at Grand Central Station and my dad ended up just being in Westchester county for the day. We managed to get ahold of both my sister and my dad to make sure they were ok. Mom came and picked me and my sister up from school by 10:30 or so. We also brought with us one of our friends whose parents both work in the city. Her mom at Columbia University and her dad in WTC building 7. It was scary. I remember watching the news at my Aunt's house where we spent the rest of the day. It wasn't until around 7pm when we learned that both of our friends parents were fine. Her dad had just gotten out of the building when tower 2 collapsed and he ran, covered in soot and debris from lower Manhattan to 116th Street to his wife's office at Columbia.
That's how I spent my day. We were the lucky ones. Listening to the over 2000 names being read and the personal messages the people are adding are heartbreaking. Some of these kids were just babies when their parent or relative died that day. My heart aches for these people. It was a day that truly changed the world more than any other during my lifetime.

‎"Our hearts are broken, but they are beating, and they are beating stronger than ever. New Yorkers are unified. We will not yield to terrorism. We will not let our decisions be made out of fear. We choose to live our lives in freedom." Rudy Guiliani
(thanks to my sister who posted that quote this morning)

oooh...fancy!

Good morning and happy Friday my friends! Once again I'm linking up with {av} for Friday Fancies!

While to most this outfit isn't very fashiony, but it is definitely outside my general realm. I love this look though. Those shoes...my heart aches for them.

Fashion forward

Have an amazing weekend loves!!

goalllll part 2.

As promised - pictures of the new haircut. I think I may go back and have her cut it a tiny bit shorter...

I love how short and swingy it is!

goalllllllllllllllllllllllllll!

I did it.

I hit my first weight loss goal! Wahoo! And yesterday I celebrated with a trip to my Aunt Tink's house to get all my hair cut off...I am SO excited about it. I love the haircut. I am hoping to get a decent picture of it today. I took a couple on my car ride home but it was too dark in the car and you couldn't tell the difference between my dark hair and my navy shirt.

Here is the before picture we snapped before she started with the cutting. (After pictures will follow later - hopefully!)

I do have to say I kind of like how my hair looks in this picture, but I love it short so much right now!!!

A before picture for those of you who haven't seen a picture of me pre-weight loss. This is me +45 or so pounds. I can't even believe it! I think I'm about 1/2 way to my dream/goal weight.

ooooh...tight!!

I mentioned that I got the old navy compression shorts from their new active line and I am completely in love with them. I can reaffirm this after wearing them on more than a few runs over the last two weeks. I have a new obsession with them. I wanted to share that I got an amazing deal on another pair when I was in the store this week. In store they were on sale for 12.99!! A steal!

After my run, resting enjoying the sunshine for a couple minutes.  My legs look pretty good here if you ask me...

hmm...pinteresting....

Happy hump day my friends. I'm excited for another oh how pinteresting Wednesday!
I have very definite baby fever. I'm sure I've shared this fact with you guys before. It is a serious problem for a not yet even engaged 27 year old. I want to fast forward a little bit to the point where Mike and I can be married and be financially stable enough to start a family together. The logical side of my brain tells me that life is short and I should live every moment and not look and yearn for the future, but it is hard.
Picking the theme for this week's Oh, how pinteresting! Wednesday was simple...

All things baby...I'll apologize now for the overwhelming amount of pins I'm about to post...

Normally I don't love gender specific nurseries, but I have a small monkey obsession and these are just too cute to pass up. I love the wall decals.

Oh my holy goodness. I love ruffle bottoms.

I would love this for a girl or boy. Green is totally my favorite.

I made my cousin's baby food and it was a great experience. I can't wait to do it for my own child.

Sigh...I'd love to have my own bedroom like this...I LOVE the stripes for a baby.

Another very girly room, but look at those flowers on the wall! Really beautiful. Love the dark grey walls.

Adore this, although I'm not a huge fan of the name Henley. Emily is my favorite girl's name at the moment.

I love this. Sometimes you just want to smoosh babies faces...Too much love.

My heart melts for this picture. Everything about it.

My little pilot will most definitely need a picture like this one!

Love this - Good luck getting the baby to stay still though! I'm impressed.

Dad is lucky, so is mom!

Sorry for the overwhelming number of pictures, but I warned ya!
